How to offer support to an alcoholic family member.

Hi everyone, my brother has just told me he is going to be going to AA meetings and I'm absolutely over the moon that he is going to be getting the help and support he needs. He's been a functioning alcoholic (I think that's the term, please correct me if I'm wrong! I'm new to this) for about 10 years. I really want to help and support him in anyway I can but at the same time I don't want to suffocate him with kindness either! I've told him I'm there for him whenever he needs me, is this all I can do as after all I know that the only person who can really help him is himself. I feel so happy that he's taken this first and very difficult step but at the same time I feel so helpless. Thanks in advance!

Only you can do is just be there for him. You'r right, "the only person who can really help him is himself", and you can get him a health professional if he needs it, might help.
